“Nuclear Seasons” by Charli XCX // Nuclear Seasons (single) (2011)

When it comes to dark, synth heavy 80’s pop tracks with a killer hook, I’m an easy man to please. It was the first genre of music that I ever remember falling for, and it’s the easiest way to my heart (especially if the synth pop has a dark, ominous or somber tone). Sure, it’s also one of the most heavily abused genres of music - often weighed down by mountains of cheese and poor writing, but that’s what makes the standouts all the more great. “Nuclear Seasons” by UK electro pop artist, Charli XCX, has all of the earmarks of a great 80’s influenced synth pop track. Neon-hued twinkling backing keys, hand-clap beats, throbbing synth lines, and killer vocals. It could easily be one of the dark electro pop jams soundtracking Ryan Gosling through the streets of Los Angeles at night in “Drive”, but instead it’s just hear for your listening pleasure on this late October evening.
